The collection
of three small structures comprising
the Madison-Lenox Hotel were the center of one of Detroit's
most bitter preservation battles. Underfunded preservationist
managed to hold off demolition for years despite the
efforts of both the City and the Ilitches. The battle
finally came to an end in May of 2005, when Mayor Kilpatrick
defyed the law and started a suprise demolition.
It
didn't even take a week before over a century of history
was reduced to a heap of unrecognizable rubble.
